Short answer: connect to a US server. The American Netflix library is the largest in the world — over 6,000 titles compared to about 4,200 in Canada — and it's what most people are actually trying to access.
But the longer answer depends on what you want to watch.
Best VPN Country for Netflix by Use Case
United States — Largest Library, Best for Most People
The US Netflix library has the most titles of any region. This is where you'll find:
- US-produced originals that aren't licensed elsewhere
- Additional seasons of shows that cut off on Canadian Netflix
- A broader selection of classic films
- Most Hulu-exclusive content once it migrates to Netflix
Best US cities for speed from Canada: New York, Chicago, or Buffalo (closest to most Canadian cities). NordVPN labels their US servers by city — pick whichever is closest to you geographically.
United Kingdom — Best for British Content
The UK Netflix library has strong British programming, BBC co-productions, and European content that doesn't make it to Canadian Netflix. If you're looking for:
- British crime dramas (real and fictional)
- Channel 4 / ITV crossover content
- European film selections
- Some anime not on Canadian or US Netflix
Connect to a UK server. London servers on NordVPN consistently work for Netflix UK in our tests.
Japan — Best for Anime
Japan's Netflix library has the deepest anime catalogue. Titles that are region-locked to Japan include some Ghibli films and seasonal anime that aren't licensed for Western markets.
Heads up: Japanese servers are slower from Canada due to the distance. Make sure your VPN uses WireGuard protocol (NordLynx on NordVPN, WireGuard on Surfshark) to keep speeds usable.
Canada — When You're Travelling
If you're a Canadian travelling abroad, switching to a Canadian VPN server restores your home library — including Crave-licensed content and CBC Gem shows that can't be accessed outside Canada.
Which VPN Servers Actually Work for Netflix?
Not all server locations work equally. Here's what holds up in our testing:
| Server Country | NordVPN | Surfshark | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | USA | ✅ Consistent | ✅ Consistent | Multiple cities available | | UK | ✅ Consistent | ✅ Yes | London servers most reliable | | Japan | ✅ Yes | ⚠️ Sometimes | Speed drops, use WireGuard | | Canada | ✅ Consistent | ✅ Yes | For use while abroad | | Australia | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | Good for AU-exclusive content |
How to Switch Netflix Regions With a VPN
- Open your VPN app and pick a server in the country you want
- If the VPN has a city selector, choose the closest city to Canada (New York, London, etc.)
- Open a fresh browser tab or restart the Netflix app
- Netflix reads your VPN's IP address and shows the corresponding library
If you still see the Canadian library after connecting, try clearing your browser cookies or switching to a different server in the same country.
Does Switching Netflix Region Affect Your Account?
No. Your Netflix account doesn't change — you still pay in CAD and your profile, watch history, and recommendations stay the same. You're just viewing the library from a different region. Netflix doesn't flag accounts for this, though they do occasionally block VPN IP addresses (which is why you need a premium VPN that rotates its server IPs).
Our Recommendation
For most Canadians: connect to US/New York on NordVPN. It's the fastest connection, the largest library, and NordVPN's SmartPlay feature handles Netflix detection automatically without any extra setup.
